Update from #OccupyICEPDX : Early this morning, several officers from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) entered the ICE facility. Later, they came out and distributed this notice. This notice is not an eviction. Media outlets have incorrectly published that we are being evicted from the premises – this is not the case. This notice is simply informing us of the federal laws we stand in defiance of. We are aware that these laws are being broken. In the face of extreme injustice, history tells us that some laws must be broken to fight for an equitable world in which the safety of all people is guaranteed. The cruel laws surrounding immigration are among these, as well as laws that seek to silence the voice of people organizing for a better world. We recognize that ethical conduct and the law are not synonymous and we must insist that the laws we follow are laws which are ethical, and which respect civil rights for all people. We are here to stay. We are calm, organized, and focused on our mission: to end ICE terror in Portland and all over the country, and we will do so while ensuring the safety of protesters, especially our most vulnerable. Further, we call on the Portland Police Bureau to observe the status of Portland as a sanctuary city and of Oregon as a sanctuary state. This means that PPB will not cooperate in any way with DHS, including the eviction of the camp. Mayor Wheeler and Governor Brown must respect this if they are serious about their commitment to sanctuary status. Yesterday, at a rally at City Hall, several elected officials stressed the importance of maintaining Oregon’s status as a sanctuary state. We will remind these people that Portland does not fulfill the requirements set forth by the Sanctuary City Task Force, including providing universal immigration legal defense services and funding an Office of Immigrant Rights. The fact that Portland does not provide these resources shows that the city is only willing to be a sanctuary city by name, and not by action. We also expect absolutely zero resources allocated by the city in cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security either in terrorizing immigrants or in shutting down this protest. We will defend this camp and we will continue to support the movement at large. Until ICE is abolished. Until all people are free
